Cataract Peak, Banff National Park, 3333m
Cataract Peak is a 3333m mountain in Banff National Park. Since it is just under 11000ft and about 26km in from the highway it is hardly ever summitted. The easiest route up is class 3 if you go early in the year or at a time when there is snow on a pocket glacier just below the summit, otherwise you will need crampons and an ice axe. Alternatively, you can take the West ridge up which is what Kayla and I did, the ridge is class 5. Cataract Peak is very loose so for much of the ascent you will be wondering why you decided to do it. Your answer will come as you get higher on the mountain. The views from the summit ridge are insane! Aside from the ascent the 24km approach to the base of the mountain is very pleasant taking you through some of the great backpacking terrain that Banff has to offer.
